Demi Lovato reveals addiction ‘I couldn’t go 30 minutes without cocaine’
Disney star Demi Lovato has been candid about her struggles with eating disorders and mental health, and now, the singer, actress and X Factor judge has revealed that she once had such a serious cocaine addiction she was unable to cope without the drug for as little as half an hour.
“I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” Lovato said in a new Access Hollywood interview. “I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it.”
“I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it”
Lovato said she was able to hide her drug habit from a minder — a “sober companion” who was watching her 24/7.
The singer said her lowest point came one morning when she found herself drinking straight vodka from a Sprite bottle on the way to an airport — at 9 a.m. “I was throwing up in the car, and this was just to get on a plane to go back to L.A. to the sober living house I was staying at,” she said. “I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it. It’s no longer fun when you’re doing it alone.”
“I think, at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, oh my god, that’s alcoholic behaviour,” Lovato went on.
Lovato, 21, checked into a rehabilitation facility in November 2010. At the time, she had been open about her struggles with depression, self-harm and disordered eating.
